Egglescliffe is a village located in County Durham, England. The parish church is dedicated to St John the Baptist and there has been a place of worship on the site since the twelfth century. Also in the village is a Church of England primary school, small public play area, farms, allotments and a public house, called the Pot and Glass. John the Baptist was a Jewish itinerant preacher in the early 1st century AD. Other titles for John include John the Forerunner in Eastern Christianity. The name Egglescliffe is derived from ancient Cumbric. Cumbric was a variety of the Common Brittonic language spoken during the Early Middle Ages in the Hen Ogledd or "Old North" in what is now Northern England and southern Lowland Scotland. It was closely related to Old Welsh and the other Brittonic languages. Place name evidence suggests Cumbric may also have been spoken as far south as Pendle and the Yorkshire Dales.
